Summary
Partnerships are crucial for fostering change in society, particularly in the solving of complex problems such as climate change. They are particularly important for researchers interested in societal change, given that research in the strictest sense is only about knowledge generation. Given partnerships are crucial for outcome-focused research, the selection of diverse strategic partners is key and must be guided by theories of change. Complementary visions are important but do not always need to be tightly structured. From farmers and producer groups to international agencies, multi-level partnerships help promote action at different levels. Collaborative arrangements are important but can be informal and flexible; many successful longer-term partnerships are deep and trustful at their core, often with informal relationships.

Summary
DETECTIVE FICTION IS ONE OF the most popular genres of fiction today in the German-speaking world, and it has a long history of popularity there. In fact, German was one of the very first languages in which the genre appeared. And yet the genre of detective fiction in German today is faced with unique challenges and issues. Simply put, there is a specter haunting German detective fiction: the specter of the Nazi past. The weight of this past is so strong that it turns Germanlanguage detective fiction into a “site of memory” (Erinnerungsort, lieu de mémoire). Of course, there is hardly an aspect of German culture since 1945 that is not “haunted” in this way, but detective fiction has particularities that set it apart and make the weight of the past particularly heavy. To understand this, we need to look first at the genre’s “rules of the game.”
Detective fiction starts with a crime, usually murder. It then asks a reader to identify with a detective as she or he brings about some form of resolution and justice by tracking down the criminal using a process of logical deduction. Yet here comes the problem: for the last 50 years it has been nearly impossible for a German-speaking audience to easily identify with a German detective or accept one as the hero of a novel, because of the sure knowledge that a real German (or Austrian) detective might well have been a perpetrator of Nazi crimes. Though, as we will see below, setting a novel in a time and place far from the Nazi era can attenuate this, it is a problem of memory and not of chronology. Any German-speaking detective automatically raises the memory of the past. Since detective fiction is always about a quest for justice, or at least a search for knowledge about a (past) crime, in the Germanspeaking world the genre inevitably becomes a “site of memory,” which forces anyone engaged with it (as reader, as writer) to remember the Nazi past and take a position on it. Thus detective fiction in German bears a special responsibility for dealing with the past and commenting on the present.
Memory and the History of Detective Fiction in Germany
A “site of memory,” in the sense of Pierre Nora, is an object, place, or even idea that is heavily inscribed with collective memory.

Summary
SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING RESEARCH and teaching in the field of German culture and letters today is being done on what is called “genre fiction.” This includes various subgenres of literature and film, such as detective fiction, science fiction, romance, and travel literature. While specialized studies of various individual subgenres exist in both German and English, there are no recent works that bring together current research on multiple genres written in the German language. We intend to begin to fill this gap. This edited collection includes a diverse selection of work on such varied topics as science fiction, detective fiction, and pop literature, all important and highly popular literary genres that have generally been neglected in the scholarly literature. By bringing this research together in a single volume, we hope to demonstrate the vibrancy and significance of work in this area, and demonstrate how the study of genre fiction can inform the modern practice of German cultural studies.
“Genre Fiction” and Genre
What, exactly, do we mean by “genre fiction”? Historically, genres or subgenres (minor genres) such as detective fiction, science fiction, romance, and travel literature have been characterized most broadly as those types of writing that appeal to a wide spectrum of the public and do not belong to the canon of high literature. Such a definition is completely inadequate today. In North America and Great Britain serious academic study of literature has long rejected the notion that only the high canon is acceptable as an object of study. This is why we use the term “genre fiction” here, for it is a broad, neutral term that better defines the works we study. We also choose not to use the earlier and now largely superseded terms “popular fiction” or “popular novel” because of the negative connotations once associated with them.
There is no satisfying exact German counterpart to our English term “genre fiction.” One could translate it as “Gattungsfiktion,” but the term is not used. Instead, the kinds of works we analyze here are generally considered under the general heading of Trivialliteratur, “trivial literature.” The very term makes some of the problems in the study of this kind of literature in the German-speaking world evident. “Trivialliteratur” is defined in a recent literary lexicon as “leichtverständliche, ein breites Publikum ansprechende Literatur” (easily understandable literature that speaks to a broad public).

We describe the role for the next-generation “superlasers” in the study of matter under extremely high-energy-density conditions in comparison with previous uses of nuclear explosives for this purpose. As examples, we focus on three important areas of physics that have unresolved issues that must be addressed by experiment: equations of state, hydrodynamic instabilities, and the transport of radiation. We describe some of the advantages the large lasers will have in a comprehensive, laboratory-based experimental program.
